HONDURAS

HONDURAS MISSION MINISTRIES 2008

PEQUINA CASA ESPECIAL en MANGROVE BIGHT (new home for Beryl and 2 siblings) is set for completion. Beryl has provided complete care for her severely handicapped siblings for some years since both her parents died of complications of AIDS.

DIABETES LONG-TERM WELLNESS PROGRAM will provide all the insulin and supplies with routine monitoring of compliance/ongoing diabetes education/and allow qualified medical personnel to assist with continuity of care for these patients throughout the year. HTN and Cholesterol Programs also set to be implemented. Our specialty teams continue ongoing including WOMEN’S HEALTH/PEDIATRIC/DENTAL and other specialties.

MARCOS RIVAS (severe burns due to electrical accident Nov 2006): evaluation for 2 prosthetic devices to R leg above knee and L partial foot . . . to get this highly motivated 33yr man back on his feet and able to support his family.

ANNA RUSELL (14yr with Life-Threatening Osteomylitis) continues in 3rd year of ongoing treatment at Hospital Loma de Luz. Just $1000 a year covers her expenses including room and board/solid education/all medical treatment and surgeries. Anna has been without s/s infection for >6months without antibiotics, and may very well be ready for initial stages of leg extension and R femur total reconstruction as early as mid 2008. We thank Dr. Jeff McKenny /Cornerstone Foundation for taking Anna in and providing such quality healthcare in a loving Christian environment, deep in the heart of the jungle of the Northern Coast of Honduras.

SAVANNAH BIGHT LANDFILL AND RECYCLING PROJECT is very much underway, with the locals placing a tax on plastic bottles that can be redeemed as bottles are recycled. Marine biologists and specialists are doing ongoing research into various aspects of the landfill project, as well as possibilities for a new FISH FARMING industry to bring back life to this all but dying tiny fishing community.

HIV/AIDS EDUCATION and TESTING PROGRAM continues with appropriate referral for those who test positive. The Honduran government now supplies antiviral medication/counseling and education/other resources to those in need of services, including pregnant young women testing positive. With appropriate treatment during pregnancy, the unborn child can frequently be protected from contracting the virus from the infected mother.

WINNING SOULS IN RECOVERY: Referral options are now available to addicts seeking a life in recovery. Jim and Julie Nelms/Paul and Martha Buford work full time on the island, offering a Christian-based Drug Recovery Program for those who seek change. We personally have seen how this program can change lives. We also thank these missionaries for all the help that they do to help us coordinate our many missions to make the most impact in what little time we have each trip.

PERU
PROJECT HOPE
An all-in-one project aimed at promoting health, education, social interaction, economic development, and the environment in Peru. Project Hope calls for the transformation of an entire area comprised of 9 communities and close to 10,000 inhabitants, many of whom live in cardboard and straw dwellings with no running water or sewage, and surrounding a large trash dump. Project Hope plans to transform a trash dump into a recreational park, build a composting center for the trash to provide a source of valuable income to the communities, install latrines, bring water to those who don't have it accessible, implement a housing program to replace all cardboard houses with solid wood, educate all families on caring for their health and the environment, and promote education as means to help break the poverty cycle.
COMPLEX FOR THE DISABLED
Comprised of over 200 members, and potentially able to reach thousands, the Association for the Disabled is a needy organization that receives no support from the Peruvian government. The Love For Peru Foundation is helping build a complex for the disabled which will provide rehabilitation services, job training and income generation for the local disabled community. Plans call for the complex to have a rehab center, bakery, carpentry shop, shoe repair, virtual library, community kitchen and a bio-mechanical shop for them to be able to fabricate and repair their own prosthetics, crutches and wheelchairs.

RUSSIA-SATKA CHURCH

United Methodist Church in Eurasia

Russia Initiative of General Board of Global Ministries
The mission to Russia started back in 1993 when Gulf Breeze UMC was chosen to be an ambassador to Satka, Russia, it was called "To Russia with God's Love". First mission trips there were to establish relationships with the people in Satka, bring Hospitality, Hope and Healing to this little town of 50 000 people and only one church, which is Russian Orthodox. GBUMC has provided help and support in the local hospital and orphanage. We have also been instrumental in establishing a United Methodist church (which was registered in November 1998), an alcohol and drug treatment center and brought models of Al-a-non and Al-a-teen as part of their alcohol rehab program. There are 150 in worship each Sunday, 10 adult home groups that meet weekly, and 30-40 young people who attend Bible study weekly. The church has operated a drug and alcohol rehab center since 2001. The church also has a soup kitchen where homeless people can get a hot meal once a week and hear the Word of God. Once a month a group from Satka UMC goes to Bakal orphanage to provide a worship service and Bible Study there for the kids and teachers.

After helping to establish this church in Satka, we continue to provide support which includes but is not limited to: Bible Studies, Vacation Bible School, English as a second language and different spiritual growth opportunities. Our church also supports the construction of the very first church building for Satka methodists since they meet in a local movie theater on Sundays. Our future plans are:

  • To continue support of the construction of the church building
  • To spread the Emmaus movement throughout the Ural District of Rusia in 2009-2010
  • To start a Christian TV channel in Satka
  • To start publishing a Christian newspaper
  • To continue annual trips and our financial support of Satka UMC

Coordinated by Olga Batova Call 932-3594, ext.125 for details.
