Habitat for Humanity
Let's get together and build something worthwhile...
To date, 23 homes have been constructed by GBUMC with house #24 currently under construction. This summer we will paint and landscape the home and change the life of another local low income family when they move in. This congregation is the first in the area to come forward and sponsor a home through the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Volunteers work side by side with low income families who will become homeowners.
Local area partner families must contribute 300 hours of their own labor known as "sweat equity." By contributing sweat equity hours, homeowners are vested in their home and neighborhood as they enjoy the tangible results of teamwork. Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity offers a long-term solution, not a quick-fix, to the problem of poverty housing. The organization makes home ownership possible for people who would not otherwise qualify for a conventional mortgage or afford safe, decent shelter.
Habitat for Humanity seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of action. Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in a partnership with families in need. Today Habitat has built over 300,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1.5 million people in 3,000 communities with safe, decent and afforable housing.
